After training at \u003cb\u003eFort George\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003eCromarty\u003c\/b\u003e, both brothers proceeded to \u003cb\u003eFrance in January 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, being drafted into the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion (the old 72nd, the original Mackenzie Highlanders)\u003c\/b\u003e and, somewhat remarkably, into \u003cb\u003e“A” Company\u003c\/b\u003e — the same company in which their great grand-uncle had served in the early days of the previous century.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe two brothers came safely through the fighting at \u003cb\u003eNeuve Chapelle\u003c\/b\u003e, but tragedy struck on \u003cb\u003e9 May 1915\u003c\/b\u003e during the charge at \u003cb\u003eRichebourg l’Avoué\u003c\/b\u003e, where the battalion suffered heavily, parading the following day only \u003cb\u003e370 men and five officers out of over 1,000\u003c\/b\u003e. Archibald’s elder brother was killed in that action.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAccording to contemporary newspaper accounts, Archie returned to the firing line that same night, at great personal risk, recovered his brother’s body, and buried him with his own hands. He thereafter continued to serve through all the heavy fighting in which the Seaforths were engaged up to the time of their departure from France.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eBy early 1916 the battalion was serving in the \u003cb\u003eAsiatic Theatre\u003c\/b\u003e, and on the night of \u003cb\u003eSunday, 13th February 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, Sergeant (acting) A. P. Mackenzie was in charge of a patrol covering a digging party in front of the position when they came into close contact with a Turkish patrol. A sharp encounter followed with an exchange of heavy fire.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe Chaplain of the Seaforth Highlanders later wrote that Mackenzie behaved with great coolness and courage, but was shot through the body and mortally wounded. He expired a few minutes after being carried back to the first trench. He was buried the following evening in a small cemetery behind the position, the Chaplain conducting the service over his grave.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe was \u003cb\u003e28 years of age\u003c\/b\u003e and is commemorated on the \u003cb\u003eBasra Memorial (Panels 37 \u0026amp; 64)\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eLocal papers recorded that his regiment and company mourned the loss of a fine young soldier and true comrade, always ready to perform any task allotted to him bravely and unflinchingly.
