He was posted to the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion\u003c\/b\u003e, one of the original Regular Army battalions forming part of the British Expeditionary Force, and proceeded overseas to \u003cb\u003eFrance on 17th December 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, joining the battalion during the early and most intense phase of trench warfare on the Western Front.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWithin days of arriving in France, \u003cb\u003eGrant was wounded in action on 28th December 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, during the brutal winter fighting that followed the First Battle of Ypres, a period characterised by heavy casualties, continuous trench engagements, and harsh conditions for newly arrived drafts. His wounding so soon after arrival highlights the severe attrition faced by reinforcements joining front-line units at this stage of the war.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAs a result of his wounds, Grant was eventually \u003cb\u003edischarged from the Army on 26th July 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, bringing his period of active wartime service to an end. However, his military connection did not finish there.
