Prior to his enlistment he resided at \u003cb\u003e3 Ladyloan, Arbroath\u003c\/b\u003e, and was employed as a ploughman at \u003cb\u003eDownfield, Dundee\u003c\/b\u003e. Following the death of his father, his mother later resided at \u003cb\u003e40 Fergus Square, Arbroath\u003c\/b\u003e, and subsequently in Dundee.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe enlisted at \u003cb\u003eDundee\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003e1911\u003c\/b\u003e, joining as a private soldier with the \u003cb\u003e1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)\u003c\/b\u003e, and was allotted the regimental number \u003cb\u003e2154\u003c\/b\u003e. On the outbreak of war he was mobilised with his battalion and proceeded to \u003cb\u003eAldershot\u003c\/b\u003e for training. He landed in \u003cb\u003eFrance on 13th August 1914\u003c\/b\u003e, entering the \u003cb\u003eWestern European Theatre of War\u003c\/b\u003e as part of the original British Expeditionary Force. During the opening months of the campaign the battalion was heavily engaged during the fighting in \u003cb\u003eFrance and Flanders\u003c\/b\u003e, including operations in the La Bassée sector.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eDuring this period he was promoted to \u003cb\u003eSergeant\u003c\/b\u003e, and later referred to in contemporary reports as a \u003cb\u003eLance-Sergeant\u003c\/b\u003e. He was wounded during operations at the front and was evacuated to the rear, where he died of his wounds at \u003cb\u003eChoques\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e26th January 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, aged \u003cb\u003e22\u003c\/b\u003e.
