During this early phase of the war the regiment remained in India, moving to \u003cb\u003eShattock\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003eMarch 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, and later, in \u003cb\u003eJanuary 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, transferring to \u003cb\u003eMultan\u003c\/b\u003e in the \u003cb\u003eLahore Divisional Area\u003c\/b\u003e. Rifleman Gulam Hussain would have spent this period engaged in internal security duties, training, and preparation for overseas service, which was a common pattern for Indian Army units in the early years of the war.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAt the \u003cb\u003eend of 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, the regiment was deployed overseas, sailing to \u003cb\u003eEgypt\u003c\/b\u003e, where it joined the \u003cb\u003e29th Indian Infantry Brigade\u003c\/b\u003e. On the formation of the \u003cb\u003e75th Division\u003c\/b\u003e, the regiment became part of \u003cb\u003e234th Brigade\u003c\/b\u003e, serving in the \u003cb\u003eSinai and Palestine theatre\u003c\/b\u003e. From \u003cb\u003e1917 onwards\u003c\/b\u003e, the battalion took part in major operations against Ottoman forces during the \u003cb\u003ePalestine Campaign\u003c\/b\u003e. These included the \u003cb\u003eThird Battle of Gaza\u003c\/b\u003e, which began on \u003cb\u003e31 October 1917\u003c\/b\u003e, and later the decisive \u003cb\u003eMegiddo Offensive\u003c\/b\u003e in \u003cb\u003eSeptember 1918\u003c\/b\u003e, which led to the collapse of Ottoman resistance in the region. During these operations the sepoys and riflemen of the 123rd experienced sustained campaigning in difficult climatic conditions, combining long marches with periods of intense fighting.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe war in the Middle East came to an end with the signing of the \u003cb\u003eArmistice with the Ottoman Empire on 30 October 1918\u003c\/b\u003e. Rifleman Gulam Hussain remained with his regiment during the post-war occupation period. In \u003cb\u003eJune 1919\u003c\/b\u003e, the battalion transferred to \u003cb\u003e31st Brigade, 10th (Irish) Division\u003c\/b\u003e, still serving in \u003cb\u003eEgypt and Palestine\u003c\/b\u003e, undertaking garrison duties and maintaining security in a region unsettled by the aftermath of war.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eIn the \u003cb\u003emiddle of 1920\u003c\/b\u003e, the \u003cb\u003e123rd Outram’s Rifles\u003c\/b\u003e were again redeployed, this time to \u003cb\u003eMesopotamia\u003c\/b\u003e, joining \u003cb\u003e74th Indian Brigade, 6th Indian Division\u003c\/b\u003e. Here the regiment was involved in operations during the \u003cb\u003eArab Rebellion of 1920\u003c\/b\u003e, when British and Indian forces were employed to suppress widespread unrest against British administration in what later became Iraq. The regiment remained in Mesopotamia until the \u003cb\u003eend of 1920\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eFollowing the post-war reorganisation of the Indian Army, the \u003cb\u003e123rd Outram’s Rifles\u003c\/b\u003e were amalgamated in \u003cb\u003e1922\u003c\/b\u003e with several other regiments, including the \u003cb\u003e125th Napier’s Rifles\u003c\/b\u003e, to form the \u003cb\u003e6th Rajputana Rifles\u003c\/b\u003e, becoming the \u003cb\u003e4th Battalion (Outram’s)\u003c\/b\u003e of the new regiment.
