Before the war he lived locally and was one of the many young men from the district who answered the call to arms.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe served with the \u003cb\u003e11th Battalion, Royal Scots\u003c\/b\u003e, part of the 27th Brigade in the hard-fighting \u003cb\u003e9th (Scottish) Division\u003c\/b\u003e. The battalion had taken heavy casualties on \u003cb\u003e1 July 1916\u003c\/b\u003e, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, and spent the following days in repeated attacks and counter-attacks around Montauban, Bernafay Wood, and Billon Wood.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eChristie was listed as \u003cb\u003ewounded in October 1915\u003c\/b\u003e, evidence that he had already seen considerable fighting during his first year in France. Returning to action with his battalion for the Somme offensive, he was killed during the \u003cb\u003eAttack on Longueval\u003c\/b\u003e on \u003cb\u003e14 July 1916\u003c\/b\u003e—a major assault in which the 11th Royal Scots played a central role. The fighting around Longueval and the adjacent woods was among the most brutal and confused of the entire campaign, costing the battalion many of its officers and men.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eWith no known grave, Private Christie is remembered with honour on the \u003cb\u003eThiepval Memorial\u003c\/b\u003e, which bears the names of more than 72,000 soldiers who fell on the Somme and have no known resting place.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003ePLEASE NOTE: All research will be sent to the buyer via email.
