In 1939 he was living at \u003cb\u003e53 Ramsden Street, Huddersfield\u003c\/b\u003e, and was employed as an \u003cb\u003eapprentice bricklayer\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eHe later enlisted into the British Army, serving as \u003cb\u003eTrooper 14205890\u003c\/b\u003e in the \u003cb\u003e10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales’s Own)\u003c\/b\u003e. His service fell within \u003cb\u003eService Group 43\u003c\/b\u003e, consistent with enlistment during the later war years. He served overseas in both the \u003cb\u003eNorth African and Italian theatres\u003c\/b\u003e, qualifying for the \u003cb\u003e1939–45 Star, Africa Star (with 1st Army clasp), Italy Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eThe 10th Royal Hussars deployed to North Africa in late 1941 as part of the armoured forces engaged against Axis troops. The regiment saw heavy fighting during the desert campaign, including operations around \u003cb\u003eGazala\u003c\/b\u003e and the decisive \u003cb\u003eSecond Battle of El Alamein\u003c\/b\u003e in October–November 1942, where British armoured units helped break the German and Italian defensive lines. Following El Alamein, the regiment continued operations in Tunisia with the \u003cb\u003e1st Army\u003c\/b\u003e, actions which are reflected in Grady’s entitlement to the \u003cb\u003eAfrica Star with 1st Army clasp\u003c\/b\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eAfter the North African campaign, the regiment remained out of action for a period before redeploying to Italy in \u003cb\u003eMay 1944\u003c\/b\u003e, where it fought continuously until the end of the war. During the Italian campaign, the 10th Royal Hussars operated both as an armoured regiment and, at times, as dismounted troops due to difficult terrain and conditions. In early 1945, the regiment temporarily left its tanks and served as infantry in waterlogged front-line positions, conducting patrols and holding defensive ground through the winter.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif;\"\u003eIn the final Allied offensive in Italy in April 1945, the regiment took part in the advance through the \u003cb\u003eArgenta Gap\u003c\/b\u003e and towards the \u003cb\u003eRiver Po\u003c\/b\u003e, overcoming strong German resistance and difficult terrain of rivers, canals, and flooded ground.
